Signs That Labour is Starting: ♥️ From Your Homesteading Doula 🌻🌼
When you're getting ready to welcome your baby into the world, it’s normal to wonder, “How will I know when labor is really starting?” Whether you're preparing for a hospital birth or a more natural experience, knowing the early signs of labor will help you feel more confident, informed, and ready for the big day.
As a homesteading doula who combines the wisdom of nature with modern birthing practices, I believe in nurturing a calm and loving environment as you approach labor. Let’s take a gentle journey together through some of the signs that labor is beginning, and most importantly, when it’s time to head to the hospital.
Early Signs of Labor You Might Not Expect
Labor is a beautiful, mysterious process, and for many, the start isn’t as dramatic as you might see in the movies. Here are some subtle (and not-so-subtle) signs that might indicate labor is starting:
🦋 Lightening (Baby Dropping) You might notice that your belly seems lower than before. This is called "lightening," and it’s when the baby shifts down into your pelvis, getting ready for the journey ahead. This can make breathing easier, but it may also cause more pressure on your bladder, making you feel like you need to pee more often. This can happen a month before your first pregnancy but frequently waits in following pregnancies.
🦋 Increased Braxton Hicks Contractions These “practice contractions” can become more noticeable and frequent in the days or weeks leading up to labor. They’re typically irregular and not painful, but they can give you a sense that your body is preparing for the real thing. A warm bath, gentle stretching, and walking around can help ease this sensation.
🦋 A Bloody Show You might see a small amount of mucus tinged with blood when you go to the bathroom. This is called a "bloody show" and is often a sign that the cervix is starting to soften and prepare for birth. It can happen days or hours before labor begins, so it’s a signal that things are moving along. This may not happen until you are in active labour and that is normal too. There is no need to rush to the hospital if you loose your mucus plug. Unless of course you have other symptoms too and/or you feel you should go in.
🦋 The Nesting Instinct In the days before labor, many women experience an overwhelming urge to clean and prepare. You may feel the need to organize your home, set up the baby’s space, or finish small tasks that have been on your to-do list. This instinct is your body’s way of getting ready to welcome your new little one.
🦋 Water Breaking For some, labor begins with the rupture of the amniotic sac, which can feel like a sudden gush or a slow leak. If your water breaks, it’s important to note the color and odor. Clear fluid is normal, but if it’s green or brown, contact your doctor or midwife right away, as this may indicate meconium in the fluid.
🦋 Regular Contractions Finally, the most obvious sign: contractions. Real labor contractions are regular, get closer together, and become stronger over time. Unlike Braxton Hicks contractions, they don’t go away with movement or rest. They’ll often feel like intense cramping or pressure, and as they get stronger, they’ll move into your lower back or pelvis.
🦋 Need for Quiet or Feel Need to Isolate Yourself As labor approaches, some women may feel a strong need to retreat to a private, quiet space to mentally prepare. This could be considered a form of "isolation" in a personal sense, but it's more related to emotional or mental preparation for labor.
🦋 Diarrhea and Loose Bowel Movements This can occur as early signs of labor due to the release of hormones like prostaglandins, which not only prepare the cervix for delivery but also stimulate the intestines, causing more frequent bowel movements. As the body prepares for childbirth, these changes help clear the digestive system and may lead to diarrhea, signaling that labor could be approaching.
🦋 Back Ache Lower back ache can be one of the first signs of labor as the body begins to prepare for delivery, with hormonal changes and the baby's position putting pressure on the lower spine. This discomfort may increase as contractions start, signaling that labor could be near.
When Should You Head to the Hospital?
Knowing when to go to the hospital is just as important as recognizing the early signs of labor. Here are a few indicators that it’s time to make your way to the hospital:
🦋 Contractions Every 5 Minutes A good rule of thumb is the “5-1-1” rule: contractions that are 5 minutes apart, lasting for 1 minute, and have been going on for at least 1 hour. This is a strong sign that active labor is underway.
🦋 Intense or Unrelenting Pain If you’re finding it difficult to cope with the pain, or if you feel like you need additional support, it’s a good time to head to the hospital. Don’t wait until you’re feeling overwhelmed—your medical team is there to help you manage your pain.
🦋 Heavy Bleeding or Water Breaking (if water is coloured, or has an order) If you experience heavy bleeding or your water breaks and you’re unsure of the situation, don’t hesitate to contact your doctor or head to the hospital. It’s always better to err on the side of caution.
🦋 Feeling Uncertain or Anxious If something feels off or you're not sure whether it's the right time to go, trust your instincts. You know your body better than anyone. If you’re unsure, it's always okay to call your healthcare provider for guidance.
